Well, I do not share the views expressed in this editorial. In this age of social media, everyone has become his or her own printer and publisher. Social media provides only a platform for expressing ourselves but such platforms categorically disown their responsibility for what you and me post on social media. The law in India has tried to make social media vicariously liable by imposing condition of due diligence but it does not seem to have significant impact.

The nature of freedom of expression at present is not the same as it was conceived a century ago. It was thought that freedom of speech would enable us to uplift ourselves collectively. But the situation is otherwise now. Irresponsible persons try to display anything without realising what impact it will have on the society as a whole. Their physical location may be at such a long distance that it may be impractical to reach out to them. Simultaneously, one click spreads the information (or misinformation or disinformation) instantaneously. The world is heading towards anarchy. Live and let live is no longer the thinking of everyone. I may like to post anything on social media which suits me, without caring how it impacts others. Collective responsibility is giving way to individual interests. Some discipline is needed. For bringing discipline in this digital age where time and space are virtually vanishing, we need to start with some curbs incorporated in our Constitution itself.
