I have often said in my posts that so-called personal privacy is a luxury of those who need to hide something. Common man’s life is so simple that you and I have same day to day problems. If my child is not so obedient, it may be yours also. We can unhesitatingly share our problems. This will bring us closer. It will lighten our mental burden. Real privacy is that we as a society should be secure and happy. That is wider concept of privacy. This is what the Supreme Court has missed in K.S. Puttaswamy v. Union of India, (2017) 10 SCC 1. Do not give unnecessary importance to privacy without properly understanding what privacy is. Community privacy is more important than so-called personal privacy. The concept of privacy came from the West. We are Indians. We have own culture. We used to be more social but now we are becoming self-centered.
As far as RTI law is concerned, I can tell you from my personal experience that Government does not need any privacy. It needs only secrecy in certain matters like intelligence, defence, external affairs, etc. There is no point in narrowing down RTI law. Government departments are already uncooperative in providing the information demanded from them.
